When my community and world have been on fire, I’ve needed to adjust my expectations, for one, as well as try to honor the needs of myself and my family.
One evening in February, when my youngest was asleep by 7pm (which rarely, if ever, has happened), I had a moment of stillness and creativity and wrote an inspiration to myself. So many people are hurting right now, on a personal, local, national, and global scale, me included.
What I wrote was inspired from Maui from Moana 2’s, “Can I Get a Chee Choo?” (which my girls and I have been listening to on repeat); and it has actually turned into an answer and roadmap to help me navigate these hard times.
In the beginning portion of the song, Maui–in his energetic, confident, and encouraging way– speaks truth over Moana and proclaims “You think you don’t have the tricks, but they’re right up your sleeve/ These waters are threatening, but you bring the reckoning/ So drop all the fear and the questioning!” I resonate with Maui’s exhortation: what if we really have what we need to get through these hard times, we only need to believe in ourselves and widen our perspective to the resources that are available to us to help us?
Here is a spoken adaption of what I wrote*:
In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, may we be open to hope and to the possibility of a path forward — that is good.
With love and care, Robyn

- If you haven’t listened yet to “Can I get a Chee Hoo?” I encourage you to!!! Dwayne Johnson (the voice of Maui) powerfully and sillily speaks truth through this song.
